Tobias Menzies

Tobias Simpson Menzies, born on March 7th, 1974 in Hammersmith, London, is an English stage, television and film actor. His parents were Peter Menzies, a BBC radio producer, and Gillian Simpson, a teacher. He has one younger brother, Luke, who is a solicitor.

Tobias Menzies attended the Perry Court Rudolf Steiner School in Canterbury, where he was trained in the Steiner System, which includes movement, singing, and instrumental music. He later attended Frensham Heights School in Surrey, where he met fellow actors Hattie Morahan and Jim Sturgess.

In 1993, Menzies attended Deborah Moody’s Year Out Drama Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon before enrolling in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating with a BA Degree in Acting in 1998. Upon completion of his BA, Tobias Menzies participated in improvisation workshops through The Spontaneity Shop, a British improvisation comedy company, as part of a graduate scheme through RADA.

Menzies’ first professional television role, beginning in 1998, was an eleven-episode stint on BBC’s long-running medical drama Casualty. He also appeared in TV shows such as Foyle’s War, Kingdom, Game of Thrones, and Outlander, in which he played the dual roles of Frank and Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall. He won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in Netflix’s The Crown.

In addition to his television career, Tobias Menzies has also acted in several films. His first professional film role was in the dramatic comedy The Low Down in 2000. He has since appeared in Finding Neverland, Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman, and James Bond film Casino Royale playing M‘s righthand man Villiers. He starred as the main antagonist, Marius, in Underworld: Blood Wars in 2016.

Aside from his screen work, Tobias Menzies has acted in several stage productions, including productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. He has also lent his voice to several radio productions on BBC Radio.
