Solange Dimitrios

Solange Dimitrios is a fascinating character in the 2006 Bond film, Casino Royale. The unhappy wife of corrupt Greek official with ties to a terrorist organisation, Solange is seduced by James Bond, who uses her to get information about her husband.

Played by Italian actress Caterina Murino, Solange Dimitrios is a beautiful, complex, but all-too-short character in the film.

Solange Dimitrios lives out in the Bahamas with her husband Alex Dimitrios, a Greek government official with some shady ties to terrorist organisations. Solange first meets James Bond, while he’s staking out the Dimitrios’ beach home. She’s enjoying a horesbnack ride while Bond is walking out of the sea. They have a short chat but nothing happens.

That night, Solange and Bond meet each other again at a poker game, where her husband is playing against Bond. Following Alex’s loss and his subsequent cold response to Solange’s affections, Bond becomes more intrigued by her.

Later, after Bond beats Dimitrios at the poker table and wins all of his money and his coveted Aston Martin DB5. outside afterwards, Bond invites Solange to accompany him back to his villa for some Bollinger and caviar.

She agrees, and they head back to make love with a few drinks.. During their rendezvous, Solange confides in Bond about her discontentment with her life, attributing it to her husband’s villainous activities and their one-sided relationship.

Her husband rings her to let her know he has some urgent business in Miami and that he’ll be away for a few days. She thinks its perfect for her and Bond to spend some extra time together, but Bond quickly gets up and heads to the airport to get to Miami, leaving Solange stranded in Bond’s villa.

After Bond kills Alex Dimitrios and successfully averts the bomb at Miami Airport, Le Chiffre mistakenly concludes that Solange must have information on what went wrong. Returning to the villa, Bond finds that Solange has been brutally tortured and murdered by Le Chiffre’s Quantum members, her lifeless body wrapped in a beach hammock.

Caterina Murino

Caterina Murino is a renowned Italian actress and ex-model, who initially aspired to be a doctor but was led onto a different path after securing the fifth place in the 1997 Miss Italy contest. Her acting journey began with training at Francesca De Sapio’s Scuola di Cinema e Teatro in 1999-2000, followed by roles in stage productions including Richard III and Italian-language plays.

Her breakthrough came in 2006 when she portrayed Bond girl Solange Dimitrios in Casino Royale, even successfully performing a challenging horse riding scene despite having a broken rib and leg pain. In 2011, she appeared in the short-lived BBC One series Zen, co-starring with Rufus Sewell, and also featured in music videos by Bob Sinclar and The Gypsy Queens.

In 2013, Murino took on the role of Penelope, Ulysses’ wife, in the TV production of Odysseus. Proficient in French, English, and Italian, she also possesses a diverse skill set which includes singing, various dance forms, and horseback riding.
