British Public Have Their Say on Next Bond
The next James Bond film is highly anticipated by fans of the iconic franchise. The film, which is currently untitled, will of course continue the story of secret agent 007, previously played by actor Daniel Craig.
Craig portrayed Bond in five Bond films, and after his final outing as the suave and sophisticated spy was announced to be his last one, it got the rumour mill going non-stop.
The next James Bond film is expected to be packed with all the action, intrigue, glamour and hopefully a move back to his “wandering” ways. Rumours are swirling about the plot and potential Bond villains, and of course we all want to know who the next Bond will be.
In a poll the British public had their say and the outcome might not surprise anyone.
Tom Hardy Wins Poll To Become Next Bond
An overwhelming majority of UK voters expressed their unequivocal preference in a survey composed of 2,000 ballots—with Tom Hardy emerging as the clear winner.
Hardy received 24 percent of the total votes, marking a major win for The Krays star. This news now makes him the nation’s favourite actor to continue the legacy of Bond, James Bond.
Speculation about Hardy’s involvement in the 007 franchise have been circulating the rumour mill for some time, even though they were never officially confirmed. That said, he’s not the favourite with the bookies as he’s 9/1 behind 9/4 favourite Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Henry Cavill and Rege-Jean Page, according to oddschecker.
Could Idris Elba Become The Next Bond?
Coming in a close second to become the famed British super-spy, 007 is none other than Idris Elba. As most of us know him from his roles in Marvel films and as detective Luther on television, he also played Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, not to mention Stringer Bell – the drug kingpin -in ‘The Wire’.
Elba emerged with an overwhelming 17% of votes, and is now number two choice among British Bond fans to follow Daniel Craig as 007. If Elba is to become the next Bond it would be the biggest shift in Bond history as the first non-white Bond.
Bond boss Barbra Broccoli has attested to Elba’s potential for the role as the world famous spy by openly discussing his chances in its future. ‘Well, we know Idris, I’m friends with him and he’s a magnificent actor,’ said Broccoli. ‘You know, it’s been part of the conversation.’
Although Broccoli has distanced herself from those claims since, pointing out that the ripe old age of the 50 Elba could be a big stumbling block.
‘The thing is, the announcement is going to be a couple of years off. And when we cast Bond, it’s a 10-12-year commitment,’ said Broccoli. ‘So he’s probably thinking: ‘Do I really want that thing? Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting Daniel Craig to do it.’
Age might be against Idris Elba, but still it would surprise nobody and cheer a large percentage of British Bond fans if Idris Elba became the next Bond. Although the Luther star has twice ruled himself out. Stranger things have happened, though.
Next Bond – Up for Debate Until The Announcement
The third most popular vote among British Bond fans went to another Peaky Blinders star, Cillian Murphy. The Irish actor received an impressive 9% of the total votes and was one of the top-rated actors in this competition.
Murphy has openly opposed the notion that he should be the next Bond star, actually saying he thinks it should be a woman. His odds are a low 40/1, below actresses T’Nya Miller and former Coronation Street star Suranne Jones.
Bond boss Broccoli has also dismissed rumours that the next Bond will be a woman, so Cillian Murphy might have a chance.
‘James Bond is a male character. I hope that there will be many, many films made with women, for women, by women, about women,’ said Broccoli. ‘I don’t think we have to take a male character and have a woman portray him. So yes, I see him as male.’
Will Tom Hardy Be The Next Bond?
From Sean Connery in the first Bond movie Dr. No to Daniel Craig ending his tenure in No Time to Die, we have been spoiled by some of the best actors to play Bond.
The next Bond, James Bond will be an ongoing debate until it’s announced. Tom Hardy was the first name among many movie fans, and remains a favourite, especially among British Bond fans.
Idris Elba is a strong contender, but his age isn’t in his favour, although at 45, Tom Hardy is only 5 years younger.
And Barbara Broccoli has thankfully dismissed rumours that Bond will be a woman. But with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Rege-Jean Page, and Henry Cavill leading the race as the next Bond, we can have our opinion, but ultimately it won’t be a decision made by the British public.
