MI6 Hoping for a Black or Female Bond to Help with Diversity Among its Ranks
The global allure and fascination with James Bond, a spy character born from the imagination of author Ian Fleming, has always held a particularly potent sway over the public.
For decades, 007 has charmed audiences with daring missions, enthralling car chases, and a notoriously luxurious lifestyle, but the longstanding image of the suave, white male spy is potentially on the brink of a significant transformation.
MI6, Britain’s secret intelligence service, acknowledges the positive impact the Bond franchise has had on its recruitment, particularly among white men. John Taylor, a seasoned veteran who served the British Government during the Cold War and subsequently trained intelligence and security services worldwide, speaks to this influence, stating that Bond has been “nothing but good” for the agency.
However, Taylor, also a King’s College London fellow, underscores a pivotal point of discussion regarding Bond’s future at the Cheltenham Literature Festival.
“The only thing chiefs, I think, would want to change, going back to an earlier conversation, and it may happen yet, is that James Bond should be a black man, or a woman, or a black woman, and you know [it] would make those sort of people also, for diversity, want to join”, he remarked, highlighting the potential that a shift in Bond’s portrayal could bolster diversity among the ranks of MI6.

A Black, Female 007 in No Time To Die
Notably, the Bond franchise has dipped its toes into more diverse casting waters with Lashana Lynch, whose character, Nomi, became the first black female to portray a double-O agent in No Time To Die.
Expressing the gravity of her pioneering role, Lynch emphasized the importance of incorporating the narrative of the “Strong Black Woman” into every conversation, as she revealed in a 2021 interview with Rolling Stone.
In the ever-swirling vortex of casting rumours, the likes of Idris Elba and Lucien Laviscount have been whispered through the corridors of speculation. Elba, despite being championed for the role by respected peers like Tom Hanks, has demurred, pointing to experiences with racist abuse as a significant deterrent.
Should the iconic James Bond role evolve to feature a female lead, Angelina Jolie stands out as an impeccable choice. With her blend of charisma, action prowess, and a history of taking on strong leading roles, she embodies many of the qualities associated with the legendary spy.
Interestingly, Jolie’s connection to the Bond franchise isn’t new. She once declined the opportunity to play Vesper Lynd, a significant character in Casino Royale. This past association only adds to the intrigue of what she could bring to the role of 007, and someone the MI6 would no doubt like.
Embarking on a New Chapter of Espionage and Representation
In addition to Idris Elba, several other black actors have been linked to the role. Damson Idris, known for his standout performance in the US crime drama Snowfall, is frequently associated with the role. Rege-Jean Page, who is a top contender according to betting odds, is regularly suggested. Interestingly, even Real Madrid’s Royston Drenthe has been ironically linked to the part.
In a world where spy narratives have been historically dominated by a singular demographic, the concept of a Bond character that breaks from the traditional mold not only challenges established norms but also opens a new chapter where representation and inclusivity become central to the storytelling.
